You must install the software on both the server (the Kubuntu PC you want to control) and the client (your Ubuntu laptop).
1. Download the Package
NoMachine is not available in standard Ubuntu repositories, so you must download it from the official site.
Visit the NoMachine for Linux Download Page.
Select NoMachine for Linux x86_64 (most modern 64-bit systems).
Download the DEB package (e.g., nomachine_8.x.x_x_amd64.deb).
2. Installation on Server (Kubuntu PC) and Client (Ubuntu Laptop)
The installation commands are identical for both machines:
Open Terminal in your Downloads folder.
Run the installation command:
bash
sudo dpkg -i nomachine_*.deb
Use code with caution.
(Replace the asterisk with the actual version number or just use the full filename).
Wait for completion: The installer will automatically set up the necessary services and start the NoMachine server in the background.
3. Setting Up the Connection
Once installed on both systems:
On the Server (Kubuntu): Open the NoMachine application from your menu. It will show a "Welcome" screen displaying your local IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.50).
On the Client (Ubuntu Laptop):
Launch NoMachine.
It may automatically detect the Kubuntu PC if both are on the same Wi-Fi/LAN.
If not, click Add and enter the IP address of the server.
Double-click the connection icon, enter your Kubuntu username and password, and you will be connected.
4. Troubleshooting (If needed)
Firewall: If you cannot connect, ensure port 4000 (NoMachine's default) is open on your Kubuntu server.
Audio/Video: Unlike X2Go, these should work "out of the box" without extra configuration. NoMachine 9.x (the 2025 version) includes many performance fixes specifically for KDE (Kubuntu).
