Seagate Backup Plus Drive slow copying on Linux
Removed drive from USB case. Connected to SATA. Booted to Kubuntu. dd MBR. GParted. Created NTFS. Processes were slow. Transferred 750 GB. First pack - 330 GB form 2.5 drive, second pack (420 GB) from 3.5” drive. Added third pack (362 GB) from 3.5” drive - F2 in Krusader. Copying slowed down and after 40 GB progress on mp3 files became 1 MB/s. Paused copying, tried to open folder on target drive and Krusader froze. Again mp3 and pausing/canceling… Krusader unfroze after 15 min. Continued slow copying. Now I can definitely tell that HDD copies 750 GB and then starts glitching. With this HDD reboot slows down, boot slows down both on Windows and Linux. Deleted MBR with dd, tried reformatting with Partition Manager, Gparted and parted, but nothing helped. Drive copied slowly, detected slowly, formatted slowly and mounted slowly. Self tests ok, file system ok…
dd all drive with zeros. Process took 11 hrs with speed 140-95 MB/s.
Noticed that BIOS and OS boots no longer lag with drive.
Booted from USB stick, converted to GPT and formatted drive in AOMEI. All processes went lightning fast. Booted Windows 10. Drive was copying whole night on Windows. 723 MB in 6 hrs. No need to Offline disk in Windows anymore even with Fast Startup enabled. Mounts as rw on Linux.
What happened with drive remains unknown. USB controller, drive firmware, canceling cp process on Kubuntu, slow copying on Kubuntu, file system fault, but so called “low level format” helped.

Krusader copied 380 GB in 2hrs!!! Then 728GB => after 500 GB copy speed on Kubuntu dropped dramatically. Canceled. Drive was “reading” 10 min, then stopped. During “reading“ smartctl -a was slow, smartctl -l devstat was slow. No CPU core stuck.
Started 427 mp3 files in Krusader – 6.1 GB – copy slow. This should be done in 2 min, but took 5. kioslave5 – 5 instances, then 1 in SysGuard. drive continues “reading” after copy for 5 min at least. During “reading” smartctl -a was slow, smartctl -l devstat was slow. No CPU core stuck.
ST4000LM024-2AN17V is SMR drive. That’s the problem. Do not buy this crap. The more intensively it is used, the worse it works. The more data you copy, the worse this drive works. Tested on Linux and Windows. It needs long brakes and smaller packs of data for fast recovery after job. On Linux speed drops harder, but when drive works properly it copies sometimes 1,5 times faster than on Windows.
